Class Reflection: 4/4/2011

Yr. 7 Maths:

Topic: Triangles

Preparation:
-"Worksheet" designed
-Animation created

Teaching Tools:
-Direct Instruction
-Individual Worksheets

Observations (Mentor):
-20% arrived without equipment
-There was lots of unrelated discussion between tasks
-Careful about turning your back on some of the class
-It's okay to expect all students to listen/participate
-May want to write/show instructions on the board/screen
-Quite a few not sure what to do (but willing)
-"Am I drawing triangles or rectangles?"
-Good to relate to previous work, i.e. arrays
-For junior students, the whiteboard is a 1:1 representation of their page- They copy EVERYTHING
-It's hard but encourage all students to participate in discussion - they don't have to do their work as a whole class though - what's the lesson structure?
---give them an instruction, example etc.
---give them tasks and some time
---come back to share, reflect, consolidate
-How about the questions: "What is the area of this rectangle?" "What is the area of the triangle inside?" Yes! A third of the class are there at 10:12 am.
-Others are a little lost: rectangles, triangles, sandwiches, angles, oh my!
-Careful to not just focus on those starting to get it.
Rather than going to a rule, it would be good for students to try some sample questions and notice the pattern
-How was the 70 minutes used?
